Q: At Woodbury, there's a lot less zombie slaying going around, but if you were going to pick out a weapon for Milton, what would it be?

A: That's the bad thing about being Milton; you don't do a lot of zombie slashing. The good news about that is that you're not running through the woods with a bunch of fake blood caked all over you. I don't even know what weapon they would give Milton. Some sort of slingshot, maybe.

I'm embarrassed to admit that the thought of using a slingshot to dispatch zombies never really occurred to me. I'm sure plenty of us here had one of these when we were kids, and know first hand that we can put a ball bearing through a garage door with one (or 3/8" plywood, or an interior door, etc), and that they're reasonably accurate with plenty of practice. What do y'all think? Pros and Cons?

Pro: ammo can be scavenged, nearly silent, light weight
Con: irregular-shaped ammo can be inaccurate, short range, requires significant practice

With the popularity of post apocalypse shows, there are a lot more emergency kits on the market. I see that Home Depot has a few, but they are pretty bland. Mostly just food and first aid (though that is a pretty realistic need).

Amazon has a Gerber Zombie Apocalypse Survival Kit that is all knives and machete's and an axe. I suppose that is what one would expect from a knife company. It does have a nice roll up case for all your implements of destruction.

The "Dude I want that" site is full of things I want, but apropos of zombies they have a somewhat more exotic zombie apocalypse kit . It's expensive and seemingly full of everything with any zombie affiliation. I might have to single out some of he items in there and look them up.

The best thing from that Dude I want that site is a link to a gunsmith who makes a Double Barrel Colt 1911a1 pistol. Yes, a double barrel pistol. Impractical? Probably. Expensive? About $5,000. Cool? I have to say yes. Perhaps that makes me unrealistic, but if I were making a zombie movie I'd want one of these for a least a couple of scenes.

Update: What's up with all the green plastic/resin handle stuff? The Browning Zombie Apocalypse Knife , Ka-Bar Zombie Chop Stick Machete , Laserlyte Zombie Bayonet , and United Cutlery Apocalypse Tomahawk

Happy Zombie Killing.

    <lj:music>Rizzle Kicks - Down With The Trumpets</lj:music>

This week I have been mostly reading: Ten Little Zombies - A Love Story by Andy Rash.

This was a Christmas present from my friends Viv & Rita. I say Ive been reading it 'mostly this week' but in fact it only took about a minute or so. The book is a short series of cartoons and a rhyme that tells the story of how Ten Little Zombies have their numbers whittled down one at a time. Being zombies their numbers also sometimes increase (usually at the expense of the unsuccessfully fleeing humans). Its actually surprisingly sweet, in a twisted sort of way - and the illustrations are really fun!

Stake Land, a Zompire movie?

Stake Land came on Netflix streaming recently and was advertised as a survival horror genre with zombie-like vampires. Zompires? It's a pretty good movie, it has actual character development and unique plot points, which sets it above a lot of the recent survival horror movies. The zombpires are dumb deadish things, basically just zombies that suck blood. The zombpire apocalypse takes place before the start of the movie, so it is set in the ongoing "search for safety" world. In general the movie worked, but id did one thing (not a spoiler) that just bugs me. They're in northern US (or Canadian) forest area find a broken down RV in the woods and figure it's good enough shelter that they can ride out the winter in it. Did no one in that movie watch Little House on the Prairie? You can't just hope to shoot rabbits all winter, you need to have some food stores. Jeez. Fortunately it moved away from the died of starvation and cold ending and back to zombpire fighting. So, no, I'm not bothered by the lack of realism in the zombpires, just in the estimation of food needed to support the characters.

Cemmetary Man & The Beyond

    <lj:music>Blondie - Rapture</lj:music>

Two Italian Zombie Movies!

The Cemmetary Man (a.k.a. Dellamorte Dellamore):

This is a real find! An Italian zombie film starring the very British Rupert Everett. Everett plays the caretaker of an Italian cemmetary where the dead rise again one week after they are buried (inexplicably) and he has to take care of their dispatch the second time. The characters name Dellamorte Dellamore comes from the Italian words for Death and Love and the dichotomy of the two runs to the very heart of the film. The zombies are rarely the focus of the film but are very much a backdrop to a strange mix of oddball comedy and existentialist adventure. The director Michele Soavi previously worked on Terry Gilliams Baron Munchausen film and his style shines through. This is one of the great unsung films of the genre despite (or possibly because of) its total refusal to be bound by the conventions of the genre. The film is nearly 20 years old now, I cant believe its taken me this long to see it.

THE BEYOND:

Another Italian Zombie movie, this one is rather less exciting. At first it has the feeling of a Sergio Leone film (complete with bad dubbing etc) and there is even a prologue with a period setting. I would have been thrilled to have found a spaghetti western stly zombie film but 'The Beyond' never reaches that standard. There is a hotel thats built on one of the 7 gateways to hell - poeple become zombies in its service. The film is like a low budget Italian version of Amityville horror with zombies added because they were popular and cheap. There really is nothing to see here, my advice is move along.

Cockneys Vs Zombies & Rec 3

TWO MORE ZOMBIE FILMS!

COCKNEYS VS ZOMBIES:

I saw the poster for this and obviously I had to get it. Luckily its pretty good. Its not Shaun Of The Dead good, but it has some nice moments. Half of the cast come from Guy Richie's @Cockneys R Us' casting department, the other half are a mix of relative newbies and seasoned British performers like Richard Briers. London is over-run when a plague pit is excavated and the zeds come out to play. There are fast zombies and slow zombies and some really nice set pieces. My two favourite moments are the scene in the old peoples home where an old guy with a zimmer frame tries to make an escape from a slow zombie - and they are both shuffling along at about the same pace, the second is where two sets of rival east London football fans meet and clash despite all being zombies now. Its not the best British Zombie comedy ever - but its a welcome addition.

REC 3:

I loved the first REC film and I really liked the second one, this is a bit more of a mixed bag. The previous two movies were set in the same Spanish apartment block (which has been quarantined because of zombies) and they both are set during the same time frame, with the stories slightly over-lapping. This third movie takes place at the same time but in a different location. I like the fact that they have tried to do something new (a third movie set in that building/time would have been a bit of a stretch). They have even managed to break out of the conceit of the first two films - that the 'movie' was being shot subjectively by one or more of the characters holding a camera within the story. By setting the third film at a wedding they start te movie in much the same way and even expanding it briefly with multiple cameras (everyone has one nowadays) but this is dropped early in the film in favour of a broader cinematic style.
Unfortunately the claustrophobic setting of the apartment block and the hand held docu-cam look of the first two films were largely responsible for giving them a unique feel within the genre - its part of what made them special, this third film lacks for these elements. Also the second film added something to the general mythology of that particular film developing the story to something that was more about demonic possession than a zombie virus in the usual sense. This third film has added little to that particular pot - it adds little to the series at all beyond a sense of wider geography.
There are some nice set pieces though - and a chance to create a genuinely iconic horror character (Who doesnt like a blood spattered bride with a chainsaw?). I quite liked this but it did feel to me like the flimsiest of the films in this series so far.

<lj:music>Noah And The Whale - Five Years Time</lj:music>

This week I have been mostly reading: The Sacrifice by Charlie Higson.

This is the fourth and currently most recent edition to the young adult zombie series that started with 'The Enemy'. Though its still a very readable book I wouldnt recommend that anyone start reading this book if they havent read the others in the series first. Its not that so much has happened that you wouldnt understand it but so much has happened that the rich back story that has lead to this point and the tensions that have been so carefully built would be lost.
Higson has created a great series with these books. I wish that they had been around when I was a kid. The characters are endlessly relatable and interesting and the basic premise (that all adults have fallen victim to a zombie-like virus is a winner. What Higson has also managed across the four books is to examine the way the survivors (all of them children) have organised themselves not just in terms of survival (though thats an important first step) but how larger groups of kids have started to build towards some form of organised society. One group are shown to have developed a cult like religion, another to have established a parliament style democracy, another group is based on a more intellectual model whose priority is scientific research into the zombie virus. Other kids have rejected all of these models and have adopted either mercenary of more bandit-like modes of living.
There is much more to these books than just zombies but the fact that they are very well written and DO have zombies is something to shout about. I will have to keep my eye out for the publication of the fifth book as there is still yet some unfinished business!
