Apocalypse Man

Anybody watch "Apocalypse Man" on the History Channel?

Gah, what rubbish. Let me count the ways:

- His first two bits of advice are "get to a major population center" and "find the hospital."

- He engages in some outrageously risky behavior when it comes to getting from point A to point B. Using a pry bar as a grappling hook and then swinging wildly from the rope. Free climbing building walls to make entry. At one point, he's in a bathroom with a window. Instead of walking around the toilet, he makes a huge leap over it. Standard Bear Grylls b.s. - makes for good TV but very foolish in the real world.

- He states that climbing down the cables of an elevator shaft is safer than leaving through the entrance you came in.

- He uses his shoulder to break down a door, while holding a prybar in one hand.

I'll say there are a few useful tidbits in the show; he showcases the battery + steel wool trick for starting a fire, and he suggests you not eat food out of bent, bulging, or rusted cans, but other than that the show was just a big, steaming pile of fail.

It seems most (just about all) shows like these forgo real world fact for the spectacular.

Obviously saying to take even less risks than you do in your day-to-day life now isn't very exciting. Practicality makes for bad TV.

I agree completely. I understand that one must accept entertainment value, but this was just ridiculously bad. On the plus side, it'll thin the heard.

Well when he falls to his death in a bathroom point and laugh

I like survivor man personally, or man versus wild, whatever that show is that has the guy out and about in the wilderness alone, with like a tooth pick and a piece of string to survive on. He tends to be more pragmatic about things, like what to and not to eat when running through the woods.

Eating anything out of a rusted anything doesnt sound like a good idea, so no news there. Bulging cans means bad food. If you have worked in a convenience store or grocery store you learn that.

Batter and steel wool thats new.

survivor man is the single burly looking dude with the camcorder

man vs wild is Bear with full narration and a film crew...who always seems to get naked in every episode for whatever "survival" reason he comes up with

well I ignore the nakedness and tend to focus on what he does, you never know when you need to find food or shelter in some weird place when on the run from Zack. Now if they could get that idea with apocalypse man then things would be great. Though when you think about it it sounds like we are naming new comic book heroes..

He also has to eat at least one "gross" thing each episode.
Found a carcass, let's get in there and tear off a piece that isn't completely rancid. Caught a fish, lets bite into the eyeball so it squirts all over the camera...

Yeah, you go Bear...

Yeah, although I frequently deride him, I still watch Bear's show because it is entertaining if nothing else. Watching a guy drink sh!t juice out of an elephant turd - that's good TV.

Les Stroud (Survivor Man) is far, far more informative and practical in my opinion.

Also, at times this guy seemed to waste resources. He used an entire pad of steel wool when a small clump torn off would do. He also opened multiple cans of food, when one would do.

Oh right, I remember that - he's only got about 4 cans of food but he opens a can of sweet corn and a can with about a pound of vienna sausages, like he's fixing a damn banquet.

I like Rudy Reyes as a person-he is an extraordinarily nice man-and I think his heart was in the right place... but his head was pretty far up his fourth point of contact on this one.

It is certainly possible that History edited his show to death and it was something much more substantial... but the way he kinda dramatically overacted makes me think otherwise.

Which pisses me off, because he could be a charismatic, attractive face for survival training and preparedness. I'd like to see Apocalypse Man become a series... that was actually useful.

yeh

What was the movie about?

Re: yeh

He was running around abandoned parts of New Orleans and showing how and where to scavenge materials, make bio-diesel, build a concealed fire, etc. Great premise but the delivery was awful. I'd agree with other folks' assessment that the producers probably made him "Hollywood it up".

Threads.

sounds pretty cool. cool premise anyway. Have you seen threads? It's a pretty accurate depiction of what would happen were nuclear war heads dropped on the u.k. It starts off with this girl who is in love with this guy and the guy get's owned then the girl roams around irradiated england in search of a good place to drop child. It's pretty brutal for an 80's film.

Re: Threads.

No, I haven't seen that. Netflix doesn't have it either so I'll have to do some internetting and see if I can find it on Hulu or something - sounds interesting.
